The first time I've ever heard of card counting actually being done in the casino was when I watched the movie 21 a couple of years back.
The movie, starring Kevin Spacey, Jim Sturgess and Kate Bosworth (among others) is a must watch for any fans of casino gambling. The movie is actually a fact-based story about six MIT students who were trained to become experts in card counting and subsequently took Vegas casinos for millions in winnings.
What card counting does is that it basically keeps track of the ratio of high cards to low cards in blackjack and its derivatives. Card counters can accurately know exactly when to hit, stand, split, or double down. Nowadays, though, casinos are doing all they can, spend lots of money and way to develop a way to thwart card counters.
Although I'm not one to gamble, I did come across an online poker software called Texas Calculatem which is a #1 selling poker odds calculator. Basically, it uses complex algorithms to calculate odds and provide the best advice for every situation, taking into account cards, position, fold depth and playing style. It's not the same as card counting it just basically helps increase your odds of winning and advising you when to fold just by using statistics.
