What would you do if you attended a party or went clubbing and your friend ended up drunk? Would you let him or her get behind the wheel?
Well, just by reading that question, you're bound to think "What kind of a dumb question is that? Of course I won't."
But the truth of the matter is, many people DO allow their friends to drive home drunk. Some have even gone so far to say "Oh, he/she is an adult. He/She should know better and think for himself/herself".
How demented, stupid, ignorant can people be??? We are not talking strangers here. We are talking friends. FRIENDS. Colleagues. How is it that people just rid themselves of this responsibility is just beyond me.
IF (God forbid) said friend gets involved in an accident because you allow your friend to get behind the wheel of the car, will you be able to sleep well for the rest of your life knowing you could have done something to prevent it? Would you be there to help him fill a form for
social security disability insurance form? You're lucky if that's the worst that happened. Worse things have happened.
Drunk driving kills. Many innocent lives have been lost due to drunk drivers. Do you want that on your conscience? The blood of your friend's life and innocent people will be on your hands because you refused to accept responsibility.
Yes, it's easy to pass the responsibility on to other people. But what part of taking responsibility for your friend's life so hard? Here are ways to keep your loved ones safe and how to keep them from drunk driving.
Become the key controller. If your friend has driven to a party and gets drunk, your only recourse is to keep them from operating their vehicle, which they can't do without their car keys. Hiding their keys will require you to dust off your improve skills from freshman year drama class but don't sweat it. Even if you're not that great an actor, it's pretty easy to fool someone who is drunk.
Call a taxi. If your friend gets really drunk at a party and the tide of tolerance begins to turn against your friend, then it's in everyone's best interest to quietly put your friend in a taxi, and send them on their way home. You should always pay for the cab in advance and make sure that the driver has explicit directions. Tell his/her family he is on the way.
Turn the night into a slumber party. Sometimes the best answer can be the simplest and most hospitable. Invite your friend to crash at your place instead of driving back home. Use an incentive like homemade burritos or your Grandma's famous biscuits and gravy. Drunk people will go to the ends of the Earth for a bite to eat.
If you are sober, designate yourself as driver. When you and your friends decided to go out, agree beforehand on a designated driver. Without one, you risk losing your drunken friend to an accident behind the wheel. A great alternative is for you to become the designated driver.
Get your drunken friend's keys and drive him/her and his/her car home for them. If you drove to the party as well, get a sober friend to follow you in your car and then drive back to the party. This way your friend gets to sleep in their bed, with their car parked outside of their home. As a bonus, you friend won't have to be ridiculed the next day when he or she shows up at the scene of last night's party to retrieve their car.
Have a deep and meaningful moment. If you've exhausted all possible means of keeping your friend from driving drunk, then it's time to get serious. Sit your friend down, and tell them how much they mean to you. Tell them how you couldn't live with yourself, knowing that you could have prevented them from hurting themselves and others but did nothing. Tell them explicitly how you feel. And you'll probably get a sloppy, drunken hug out of it.
Somebody must claim responsibility for this person and that somebody is you. Take their keys, drive them home, call his/her family to come get him/her, leave his/her car at the party and get that person a taxi, etc. There are many ways to deal with it. Just because you don't want to get stuck with a drunken person and how that will LOOK on you, then think about how this girl LOOKS. If people continue to allow their friends get behind the wheel in a drunken state, this is what may happen.
DON'T EVER ALLOW A DRUNK PERSON OR SOMEONE WHO YOU KNOW HAS BEEN DRINKING TO GET BEHIND THE WHEEL. Help save lives.
